A banda foi criada por Dez Fafara, ex-vocalista da banda de Nu metal Coal Chamber. Dez iniciou o DevilDriver pois estava cansado de tocar new metal e queria fazer músicas pesadas e com influências deThrash Metal, Death Metal e Black Metal.
A banda no começo se chamava DEATHRIDE, porem devido a varias bandas ja existentes com o nome Dez decidiu trocar para o nome "Devildriver", em sugestão de sua esposa. O nome foi achado num livro de bruxaria Striga.
"DevilDriver" - é o nome que as bruxas dão para os sinos que elas usam repelir o mal quando estão realizando seus feitiços, e também significa no melhor estilo headbanger motorista do demônio…
